She took a long, deep drag on her cigarette, and for a moment Eddie wondered if some intangible part of his mother's being had been left behind in oblivion when her body was revived. He knew, of course, his mother had always been like this. That was what baffled Eddie: She’d come back to resume life as ordinarily and unchanged as possible. She’d come back without any secret knowledge of the grave. She’d come back and the world was no more meaningful nor complex.
